Thesis Statement: Even before the first European explorers landed on Alta California the people of California were living in a complex world, which used the riches of the region but was primarily shaped by the people themselves. Throughout the Native, Spanish, Mexican and American eras the development of California has been based on equal parts of the gifts of nature and boundless human creativity.
