Thesis Statement: While it is impossible to ignore the importance to the development of California by the coming of the railroad, this industry really represented only a time frame whose social significance has passed. However, this cannot be said regarding the greater cultural consequences of both mining and oil. These industries have left an impact on the social fabric and economy of California that still remains pointedly obvious at the dawn of the twenty-first century.
