11. Topic The Two Party System. Thesis: It would be difficult to imagine the United States without the two party system. Every presidential selection, with the notable exception of George Washington, involved political parties and yet this system was not anticipated or advocated by the framers of the Constitution. The three two party systems which evolved before the Civil War were the result of the ambitions of political leaders and a quagmire of varying local and national interests.
