10. Topic: The Puritans and Religion. Thesis: The Puritans established the Massachusetts Bay Colony to escape what they believed was persecution by the Anglican Church. However, while they did not intend to establish a colony which embraced freedom of religion, in the American context the Puritans set into motion a series of events which would eventually result in the separation of church and state as recognized in the United States Constitution.
