Topic: The Civil War. Thesis: The Civil War has often been characterized as a war fought to end slavery, however this was certainly not the aim of those who fired the opening volleys. The Civil War started as a war of secession, initiated by the South, yet it would end not simply as a war to save the Union but as the "Second American Revolution," a war re-interpreted by the North to end slavery in all of the United States.
