Learning Communities

                                                            Learning Communities

What is a Learning Community?

  • Students working together in two or more linked classes with a common theme.
  • There are three types at SJDC.  In the first type all the same students are enrolled in the same group of classes  and coursework is integrated.  For example, the same 30 students all enroll in English 70, Reading 91A and Guidance 5.  STUDENT SUCCESS Learning Communities follow this format.
  • In the second type all the students that are enrolled in one class also enroll as part of a larger lecture class.  For example, all 35 students enrolled in an English 79 class also enroll in a AJ 21 class (35 Eng students plus 30 other students = 65  total for the AJ class.)  Our MAJOR THEMED Learning Communities follow this format.
  • The work in one class often relates to the work in the other class or classes; for example, reading in one class supports your assignments and understanding in the other classes.  In a Reading class you may read poems by a specific author, in the Guidance class you may watch a film about the poet, and in the English class you may write your own poem or write about the poet and your interpretation of his poems.
  • The third type is a cohort of students that take classes together but coursework may not be integrated. EOPS Academy and Teacher Pipeline follow this format.

What are Some of the Advantages of a Learning Community?

  • Learning Community students have higher success than non- LC students.
  • Learning Community students interact more with other students and faculty.
  • Learning Communities are great for meeting new people that have common goals and dreams.
  • Learning Community students build long lasting relationships with other students on campus.

How do I enroll?

  • Register for any one section in the Learning Community and you are automatically enrolled in the entire Learning Community.
  • YOU MUST BE IN ALL CLASSES in the Learning Community.
  • If you drop any one of the sections, you will be dropped from all classes in the Learning Community.
  • Call 954-5906 for more information.
