What can faculty do to improve retention?

• Incorporate study skills within your own classroom. Establish specific measurable performance criteria and learning outcomes.Provide feedback and use the Academic Alert Letter as one of your retention tools.

• Use your resources. Delta College has a wide variety of support services available for our student’s need.

• Delta College continues to expand its faculty support services of workshops, information sharing and expansion of online services to ensure we have access to resources needed to best serve our students.

• Have fun! Remember, whatever the demographic profile of Delta's "typical student"* is, you will always have a different mix and a different class dynamic with each semester, indicating different needs--that's what makes this job so exciting!

Why are our students not studying as much as we think (know) they should be?

Many never had strong study skills demanded or reinforced. For students who didn't have to study before, chances are they didn't. If they weren't properly challenged before, they may need to learn these valuable skills.

Some students never had to do more than "homework." In many high schools, time is allotted in class to work on "homework," prompting many students to not have to do work outside of class. Few do work that is not specifically requested of them--like going over notes, rereading chapters, or doing problems that weren't assigned. These study skills that we may find to be second nature weren't valued or expected in the early years of student life.

What is the role of the Coordinator of the Academic Alert Program?

• Coordinate and promote the support programs and services available to students experiencing academic difficulty.

• Establish and coordinate faculty resources to support the growing number of inquiries received on classroom and/or student issues.

• Identify “high at risk” student populations and work with staff to encourage and promote the use of the Academic Alert Program as a retention and academic support tool.

• Provide counseling by appointment for specifically referred students.

• Provide training and information as needed in the use of the Academic Alert Program as an important retention tool.
