What is a FAFSA?

FAFSA - Free Application for Federal Student Aid. Also known as the "financial aid application". It is a general application used to apply for financial aid nationwide.

If you have NOT already completed one you can do so online by clicking here
The Department of Education uses the information provided on your FAFSA to determine your eligibility for aid from the federal Student Financial Assistance (SFA) programs.

The state of California also uses the information on your FAFSA to award you state funded financial aid.  Additional forms may be required to compete for state aid. Check the California Student Aid Commisison web site to determine which forms are required.

I submitted my FAFSA but forgot to list SJDC, how can I get my FAFSA information sent to SJDC?

You need to call Central Processing Center,
1-800-433-3243. Tell them you would like to add San Joaquin Delta College and that our code number is 001280. They will ask you for your DRN number listed on the top left hand corner of your Student Aid Report, so have it ready when you call.

I completed my FAFSA, now what? What happens next?

If you listed Delta College on your FAFSA we will receive your information electronically about 2 weeks from the date you completed your online FAFSA.

When we receive your FAFSA we will send you an e-mail to your Delta College E-mail account letting you know what you need to do next to complete your file and be awarded financial aid.

You can also log in to Delta's Online Financial Aid System to check your status. You will need your Delta ID number and Delta assigned PIN (usually your date of birth). If you cannot log into the system then it means that we have not yet received your FAFSA.

I've already submitted all the required documents. How do I find out who is working on my file in the Financial aid office?

If you listed SJDC on your financial aid application (FAFSA) and you have received your Student Aid Report you can check your application status online. Follow these steps:
  1. Once the SJDC Financial Aid Office has received your financial aid application data from the processor, you will receive* an e-mail from us notifying you to log into Delta's Online Financial Aid System.
  2. Use your Delta ID & PIN number, then click the Submit button.
  3. Once your information has been retrieved then click on the Messages Tab on the Navigation Bar to locate the message indicating the Specialist working on your file.
  4. Click on their e-mail address, then compose and send your message.

I thought I could afford community college. Now the fees are going up, the cost of books is unbelievable, even the price of gas is more than I can handle. I need help!!! Is there aid for working students?

You don't have to come from a low income family to qualify for financial aid. You just have to show that you need help with the costs of college attendance. Most middle income families need every dollar just to support the household. They don't have any extra money to pay for fees, books or school transportation. More than likely such families will qualify for financial assistance. Assume you are eligible. Apply now

I've thought about financial aid before, but I don't want to have a big debt hanging over my head when I leave college. Can I get financial aid now that I don't have to pay back later?

Most financial aid at SJDC or any other public college is money that doesn't have to be repaid. Grants, part-time employment and scholarships make up 90% of the approximately $20 million in annual aid received by students at Delta College. Only a small percentage of students take out student loans. If you apply early, chances are that all or most of your financial need can be met with aid that doesn't have to be repaid.

I've seen the application and instructions for student aid. It looks like an encyclopedia. I'd like to apply but I can't figure out the system. How can I get money when I can't even understand the form?
