Maya Ruins

Glory & Ruins of the Maya Culture

Featuring Tikal, Copan, and Antigua

Thousands of years ago, an ancient civilization made its presence known in a place of breathtaking beauty. Enter the land of the Maya and embark on a journey back in time, immersing yourself in this civilization of astronomers, mathematicians, philosophers, artists, architects, and warriors who developed writing (using glyphs), calendars, ceremonial temples, and hierarchical societies ruled by kings and noblemen.

On this tour, you will visit four UNESCO World Heritage sites: Copan, Quirigua, Tikal, and Antigua. Cruise Lake Atitlan, considered by many to be the "closest thing to Eden on Earth," against a backdrop of the San Pedro volcano. Visit a coffee plantation and learn about the cultivation and processing methods and the importance of coffee to the local economy. Mingle with the locals at Central America's largest and most colorful clothing and crafts outdoor market. Visit Guatemala's Archaeology Museum, filled with priceless Mayan artifacts, and learn the historic importance of jade. This journey through Guatemala and Honduras is enhanced by stays at small, rustic hotels for an authentic flavor of this amazing region. Your tour begins in Rome, where you can sign up for an optional tour of Classical Rome or enjoy free time to explore on your own. You'll travel next to the medieval walled city of Assisi, the birthplace of the patron saint of Italy, St. Francis. Tour the magnificent Basilica of St. Francis and the historic old city. In Siena, behold stunning palaces, mansions, and the historic Piazza del Campo. You may want to climb to the top of the Torre del Mangia for a breathtaking view of Siena and the Tuscan countryside. Discover the hilltop village of San Gimignano, one of the most picturesque places in Tuscany. You'll visit a Tuscan winery and learn about the art of winemaking and the process of making Italian olive oil

Moving on to Florence, known as the "Cradle of the Italian Renaissance," you'll see many of the city's priceless treasures, including the Academy Gallery, which houses Michelangelo's monumental statue of David. At the Piazza del Duomo, see the impressive Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore and view the Church of Santa Croce and the burial places of Michelangelo, Galileo, and Machiavelli.

As you move on to Montecatini Terme, you can choose an optional excursion to Pisa and Lucca. In Pisa, you will find the Piazza del Miracoli, the Cathedral or "Duomo," its historic Baptistery, and the world-famous Leaning Tower of Pisa. In Lucca, you can explore gothic palaces, quaint shops, and bustling streets. You will return to Florence and enjoy a guided tour of the amazing Pitti Palace and see master works by artists such as Raphael, Rubens, and Caravaggio. Roll up your sleeves and prepare to discover how to cook New Orleans-style during a unique cooking demonstration at the New Orleans School of Cooking.
