Job Specific Basic Skills (JSBS / Reading 98) is a supervised lab environment designed specifically for CalWORKs students. Selina Mendoza is the CalWORKs employee who coordinates the JSBS lab. The course, which is open entry/open exit, gives students the opportunity to increase their reading and writing skill levels. Tutoring is available. Instructors assign modules to students, on an individual basis, based upon assessment of their skills. Students of all skill levels are appropriate for JSBS. Job Specific Basic Skills prepares all CalWORKs students for success in their vocational training programs and throughout their careers.
JSBS/Reading 98 can be repeated as many semesters as a student attends and participates in the CalWORKs Program. Textbooks are required for students enrolled in JSBS. The books are purchased once and used throughout the students' program of study.
While JSBS is open entry/open exit, students are assigned to specific times in the lab based upon each individual's schedule of classes. Students earn a credit or no credit grade and the number of units earned in a semester depends upon the number of hours students attend. Each student clocks in and out daily and the hours are tracked carefully by the CalWORKs staff.
Supervised Study Time (SST) is also available to students who are enrolled in JSBS. Supervised study time is allotted to each student based upon his/her class schedule and needs. Hours spent in Supervised Study Time also count toward a student's CalWORKs participation requirement (32/35 hours). Supervised Study Time can also be counted as a core activity. Hours are monitored by time clock and are reported monthly to CalWORKs Case Managers.
A computer lab is available for students to use for:
Students are referred to JSBS and SST by an Academic Advisor. To schedule to meet with an Academic Advisor, call 954-5404.
